The client
newteacherstalk gives early-career teachers online video lectures and modules on the legal, ethical and professional side of teaching: the things nobody covers in training and everybody is expected to know. It was built by Alan Newland, a former headteacher and Department for Education adviser, who lectures and writes on the subject from Cheltenham in the UK.
The challenge
Alan had tried virtual assistants before, through agencies such as Fiverr and with freelancers in several countries, and in his words it “has not worked out well.” The work needed was not exotic: fresh contacts for his outreach, a contacts database that had gone stale, a library of lecture videos that needed editing to a consistent standard, and a social media presence that had to be fed daily if it was going to work at all. What had been missing was someone who would do all of it to a high standard, communicate clearly, and still be there the following week.
What Geoffrey did
Geoffrey Ndung'u, a Virtual Wise team lead, worked with Alan for about six months on an almost daily basis. The engagement grew in three stages, each one started because the previous one had gone well.
Research and the contacts databaseInternet research for fresh contacts in the education sector, and a refresh of Alan’s existing contacts database in Excel: duplicates removed, details verified, gaps filled. Alan says this was “done to a standard that surprised me.”
Thirty lecture videosAlan then handed over the videos hosted on his website. Geoffrey re-edited around thirty of them in Adobe Premiere Pro and CapCut: cutting, titling, cleaning up audio and preparing consistent formats for the site, with assets labelled so Alan can find and reuse them.- A month-long social campaignA daily campaign across five or six of Alan’s social platforms, including LinkedIn, with graphics prepared in Canva and posts scheduled through Buffer, so a month of daily publishing could be run efficiently rather than post by post.
I have worked with virtual assistants before, often through agencies like Fiverr and from places like Brazil, Kenya and Bangladesh, but it has not worked out well. However, I have worked with Geoffrey Ndungu for about six months now, on almost a daily basis, and his work has been of a very high quality.
What made the difference
Alan is specific about this. The technical work was good, but “the most reassuring thing about working with Geoffrey is not just his technical competence but his excellent communication skills. His spoken and especially written English is excellent.” For a client whose own work is about clear professional communication, that was the deciding factor, and it is the thing previous assistants had not delivered.
Cost mattered too. All of it was done, in Alan's words, “with a reasonable level of cost.”
The results
Researched and verified rather than scraped, ready for outreach.
Re-edited to a consistent standard and hosted on the website, “completed to a very high standard.”
Across five or six platforms, run on a schedule through Buffer.
A full revamp of the newteacherstalk website on Wix, and Alan’s word that he “will be using him again.”
